Calvert Hospice’s We Honor Veterans Program: A Way to Thank Those Who Have Served

We Honor VeteransWe are very proud to be a Level 3 partner with We Honor Veterans, a collaboration between the VA Administration and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). Calvert Hospice has been a member since 2012, and we are constantly working to improve the services we provide to our veteran patients. We believe it is important to recognize veterans’ service to our nation, especially those who fought in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam who, in many cases, did not come home to a hero’s welcome.

How does Calvert Hospice Honor Veterans?

We provide veterans with an opportunity to share their military experiences with our staff and with veteran volunteers who are uniquely suited to serving them. We have Vet2Vet volunteers who have also completed our comprehensive volunteer training and are able to visit with patients in their homes. Our veteran volunteers understand military culture and often have experiences in common, which helps promote conversation and allows the patient to open up and share with someone who “gets it.”

WHV PiasonOur staff and veteran volunteers offer a salute ceremony as a final honor for patients. The salute ceremony includes a presentation of a certificate that acknowledges the veteran’s service, a pin from We Honor Veterans, a poem presentation, and a blanket that is handmade by our staff and volunteers. Veteran volunteers attend and offer patients a final salute, an honor and thank-you for the service and sacrifice given for our great country.
